Angmering Village Flower and Produce Show

Angmering
Village
Flower and Produce Show 2022

Picture
It was almost a year ago when the plea came in to the Angmering Parish Council that, after 2 years absence with Covid 19 lockdowns, the committee for the traditional Angmering Flower and Produce Show felt that they could no longer produce this show after having sadly lost the beautiful Pigeon House venue, where it had been held for 26 years.  A venue was straight away offered by the Angmering Community Centre free of charge -  without which the show would not have got underway, and a new committee was then formed.  Graham Butt Estate Agents agreed to do our printing of the schedules once again and Cooper Adams Estate Agents donated a replacement trophy.

After many ups and downs the new show finally took place on Saturday 23rd July at the Community Centre and indeed far exceeded everyone’s expectations. The committee had spent the final weeks sorting several last-minute hitches, including a judge contracting covid, getting advertising in place and encouraging entries as there was a very slow stream of entries at first. Friday night and early Saturday had been spent preparing the venue with exhibition tables, bunting, polished trophies, seating and catering needs. From 8am in the glorious sunshine the exhibits started pouring in and the whole atmosphere began to take shape. The more entries that came in, the more spectacular the hall looked.

At 10.30am the doors were shut for entries and judging commenced. Whilst the judging and scoring was going on, the stall holders had begun setting up their stalls outside and everything was prepared for the public to return at 2pm. There was a variety of stalls such as Angmering in Bloom, Culberry Nurseries, The Jam Lady, T & M, Fused glass gifts and the Ice Cream Van, together with a Bric a Brac stall run by the Committee. The bunting that adorned the hall and hedges had been hand made by locals with donated materials during lockdown, aided by  Angmering With Love and even the local school children were involved with hand painting some of it.

Angmering Green WI ladies ran the cake stall and other members from both the village Women’s Institutes, the Angmering Horticultural Society and also friends of the committee were manning the refreshments, washing up, selling raffle tickets and generally running around helping. There was a real buzz around the hall.  As time went by the committee and helpers began to breathe again and start enjoying the day. All the months of planning certainly paid off.  At 3.30 the cup winners were announced - the results can be seen here. The last thing to be done was the raffle draw which had wonderful prizes donated by local traders, including The Big Fry, Meat in the Square, The Stone Room, Jeffreys Hairstylists, Culberry Nursery and The Co-op as well as from members of the Angmering Horticultural Club and Angmering Green WI and other individuals.
None of this would have happened without the work of the dedicated but very small committee. Their partners and friends did a sterling job including setting up and transporting equipment and providing really efficient help on the day. Many thanks go to all those who entered and those who supported us in other ways to make it a really special day.  There were many very positive comments which has given us the impetus to do it all again next year maybe on a grander scale so watch this space.

We really need some more help if a 2023 show is to go ahead so anyone who feels tempted to join the committee or would like to be a volunteer just to help in the run up and on the day and to get involved with the atmosphere, please contact Jenny Blake on
